| The Island of Cozumel has many beautiful beaches
and the water is warm and wonderful! You can swim
and snorkel and SCUBA right at the beach in front
of Tango del Mar, or you can head North, South,
or East to take in the variety of options.
On the western (leeward) side of the island,
the water is usually more calm and ideal for swimming,
snorkeling, and SCUBA diving. There are many things
to be seen below the surface and the water is
usually very clear with visibility often between
100-140 feet. There is usually some current, so
it's wise to check the speed and direction when
you get in the water so you can head against it
during the first part of your swim and then drift
back to your starting point. All of the SCUBA
dives are drift dives so the boat drops you off,
then follows and is ready to pick you up when
you surface. How easy is that? Most of the western
waters are included in the National Marine Park.
That means no fishing, and don't take anything
from the water or the beach-it's probably someone's
home! Several west-side beaches are known for
their easy access to excellent snorkeling including
The
Money Bar Beach Club at Dzul-Ha. This is known
as the best snorkeling place on the island. The
Money Bar also offers a resort course in SCUBA
for new divers wanting to give SCUBA a try before
signing up for the whole Certification Course.
They're north of Tango del Mar on the beach road.
Another favorite, Paradise
Beach, 1 km south of Tango del Mar, offers
many water activities plus a beach-side restaurant.
On the eastern (windward) undeveloped side of
the island, there are miles of white sand beaches
punctuated with rock outcroppings. The surf is
usually high and there are often strong currents
and occasionally a strong undertow. There are
lifeguard stations along the way, and flags mark
the current safety status. Depending on conditions,
it is a wonderful place to spend the day swimming
or playing in the waves and watching the surfboarders
or the kite boarders. Even if you only stick your
toes in, a trip to "the wild side" is
well worth the effort. There are beach restaurants
and bars that serve excellent fresh fish and other
fare during the daylight. One of our favorites
is El Galleon at San Martin, km post 41.
The biggest attractions in Cozumel are at the
beach or under the water. Go exploring and enjoy
it!
